Millennium Count Down of 1999
Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God
An estimated 500 followers of this movement burned themselves alive March 19, 2000.
They predicted apocalypse and committed mass suicide. The Movement for the Restoration
of the Ten Commandments of God was formed in 1989 by former Roman Catholic priests
and nuns. One of them, Joseph Kibweteere, announced that the Virgin Mary had appeared
before him in a vision. He said he was to found a mission devoted to living by the 10
Commandments. Kibwetere believed that the world would end on Dec. 31, 1999.
When the world did not end, just as it did not end in 999, the leader pushed the
date back a year. By now it was 2000. Then he called the believers from their homes
all across the African nation of Uganda to the city of Kanungu. As everyone gathered for
the revelation of the end of the world, the mass sucide began with an fiery explosion.
