Millennium Doomsday Prophecies

Skeptic's Version

Now that the year 2000 has arrived, it has become a trend in the media and among the public to regard the year 999 as a time of paralyzing fear, widespread panic and general confusion. While this might be easy for the Believers to accept as historical fact, it may be more fantasy than fact. There was no general panic, no universal abandonment of life while all awaited death and judgement. Documents, royal speeches, papal bulls and chronicles of the time offer little evidence of mass hysteria.

In this century, skeptical psychic investigators and medieval historians have begun to suspect that the public's willingness to believe that the turn of the last millennium was a time of great horror and upheaval. Skeptics dub this myth the "Terrors of the year 1000."
