Apollonius of Tyana
Vespasian (left) places his hand on the shoulder
of his son Domitian. It was the assassination of Domitian that
Apollonius saw in his clairvoyant vision in the marketplace of
Ephesus, supposedly just the moment it occurred. The Roman emperor
had Apollonius brought before him on charges of sorcery but somehow
the philosopher escaped. Christians were persecuted by Domitian,
who had himself declared a god. Eusebius wrote: "He was the
second that raised a persecution against us." Along with
Nero and false prophets like Apollonius and Simon
Magus, Domitian was considered the antichrist
.
