Apollonius of Tyana
Bishop Eusebus (left) of Caesarea,
an early Church historian, believed Apollonius to be
the AntiChrist. He wrote a counter-attack to the
Roman movement to set Apollonius up as a god.
The emperor Alexander Severus worshipped at a
private shrine with images of Orpheus, Abraham,
Jesus Christ and Apollonius of Tyana. Hierocles,
governor of Bithynia wrote a treatise, Lover of Truth,
which claimed that Apollonius was superior to Jesus.
Pagans were so impressed by Philostratus' Life of Apollonius
that many compared him to Jesus Christ.
