NOSTRADAMUS VS. the Plague Doctors

Nostradamus was a healer, among other things, and he lived in times of terrible plagues. He learned apothecary arts at medical school, which would now days be called pharmacy. His approach to treating sickness put him at odds with the traditional plague doctors.

The plague doctors of the day would wear these strange-looking leather masks with goggles and were covered head to toe. The bird beak mask was designed to filter the air and remove the plague 'vapors.' The beak was filled with a mix of herbs.
