The Death Spell that Started the Hundred
Years War

Pictured at left, Phillip VI of Valois
was King of France in 1333 when he had a death spell cast against
him. The would-be assassin was Robert III of Artois.
Robert had been accused of producing forged title-deeds and bribing
witnesses in support of his alleged rights to be the Count of
Artois. He had refused to appear before the King in answer to
this charge, and was condemned to perpetual banishment and the
loss of all his property by a decree of the Paris Parliament.
He fled first to Liege, then to Namur, and finally to England,
where he tried to cast his death spell on the King and his family.
