
"Witchcraft in the Middle Ages."
Above, A black-robed crone riding through the night
sky on a broomstick. In 1666 the belief that witches flew was general
amoung intelligent people, including the clergy. The witch was believed to annoint
her body with secret ointments, which endowed her with the power to project
herself through the air, using as a conveyance either a broomstick, pole,
hayfork or milking-stool.
