In STONEHENGE II, about a millenium later (2222 BC), the axis of Stonehenge shifted slightly,
and along this axis an earthen avenue was built, at the entrance. At this time the Station Stones were
put in place, forming a virtual rectangle enclosing the circle of upright stones. These four stone markers
are located on the circumference of the Aubrey Holes circle, are known as 91, 92, 93 and 94 on plans
of Stonehenge. The four points align with astronomical events. Other alignments include the Heel
Stone on midsummer sunrise. Only two of the Station Stones remain today. It was during the
Stonehenge II phase that the blue stones were arranged within the henge. Blue stones are the
smaller, darker stones.
