After testing all the oracles to see which was the most accurate, King Croesus of Lydia came to Delphi, bearing gifts for Apollo.
After unpacking the offerings at the shrine of Lydia, the Lydians asked the oracle if Crosus should attack the Persians. The oracular response was ambiguous,

" If Croesus attacks the Persians... He will destroy a great empire!"

Croesus attacked the Persians, believing the prophecy was favorable, but he was defeated. The great empire destroyed was his own.
